Philosophy of Music Teaching
Music surrounds mankind everyday making music education invaluable. Music education is essential and must be taught at some level in all schools. It is not merely an extra-curricular class, but a necessity comprising the “core” curriculum. Moreover, music education is an integral part of a comprehensive education, engaging the objective, subjective, symbolic, and concrete aspects of human experience. Every child can benefit from it in these ways.
Music is an aesthetic experience allowing the student to explore his or her own humanness and inner self. It provides an outlet for expression that many students do not find elsewhere, encouraging creativity and self-expression. The power to communicate through sound transcends language barriers.
Music promotes unity, diversity, and a unique historical and cultural awareness. By studying multicultural music students can best understand and recognize the differences present in our world. As a result students will develop a greater sense of one self, and a more open minded attitude toward others.
